THIEF! June 28, 2007

Remember how I said that my husband rocks? Well, I take it back…

I went for a run this morning with Beth (and it was a nice run too).  I took my brand new Forerunner and enjoyed discovering what a pathetic pace we run at.  But, it was cool because I set it up to beep every mile, so everytime it went off we kind of puffed up (let’s get to 3 miles…let’s get to 4 miles…).  It’s a fun little gadget.

Then, my day started and being busy-busy-busy (including an hour-and-a-half of shoveling hogfuel again) I took a little nap before dinner while the girls played Uno.  During my peaceful (albeit alert to any kind of stress signal from the kids) slumber, my sneaky husband came home to go on his bike ride.  I awoke, refreshed, and thought that now was the perfect opportunity to upload my Forerunner information. That is, IF I COULD FIND IT.

Yes, my birthday present, the one that I’ve had for 2 days now, is sitting on the wrist of my thieving husband. I had ho idea I married a petty criminal.

Oh hey, he’s home now… Time to claim what’s mine…

My Husband Rocks June 26, 2007

Today is my birthday, and I want to put it out there in the open that my husband is awesome.  Most guys get their wives/girlfriends pretty little things.  MY husband knows me all too well and got me a Forerunner!  I LOVE gadgets, and if I can incorporate a gadget into my workouts, then woo hoo! So watch out!

Today it was super windy and hot out here, but I went for a ride on Scout/Raisin today anyway.  He was particularly good, not nearly as fussy as he usually is.  We only ride for 20 minutes before he just stopped. I think he was just pooped. So, we called it a day.  He was pretty sweaty, so he got treated to a bath.  Horses have a lot of real estate, so as you can imagine it wasn’t exactly a quick process. But he’s all nice and shiny now.  (Until he rolls.)

And I still haven’t made it to the gym yet.  I blame Meerkat Manor… (and the killer spooning).

So, believe it or not, the name “Raisin” has stuck.  Poor Scout will have to endure a very cute but rather humiliating name.

Today we had a VERY good ride, especially considering he hadn’t worked since Monday. Today I was a bit smarter than last time, and free-lunged him first. He was actually pretty mellow, so we proceded to tack up and get down to business.

At the mounting block he was the best he’s ever been. Keeping him soft on the right side with flexions really does seem to work. My guess is that he’s so tense and anxious that he moves away from the mounting block in anticipation.

His walk today was big but not rushed. He found his “comfy spot” in his frame rather quickly and gave me a few instances of true bend.  He also didn’t try and run away from my leg so much — far less skittering than before.

When we went off into trot, he was relaxed and soft.  After we circled half the arena he started to get worked up again, but this time when I used my seat to slow his tempo, he didn’t fight it so much.  He’s starting to catch on…

After the warm-up we worked on 3-loop serpentines with a counter-bend in the middle loop. I tried to concentrate on releasing when he softened to make sure that he got the reward he deserved.

We ended with canter departs in both directions and a nice stretchy circle. He has a wonderful honest stretch that he really seems to enjoy.

My next ride is Tuesday, and I’m going to attept the gym in the morning. Wish me luck!

…of Jeff’s directions.  Jeff wrote me instructions on how to insert a run from www.mapmyrun.com and this is what I did:

Nice, huh?

DO NOT EAT ALFREDO SAUCE THE NIGHT BEFORE A RUN. HEED THIS WARNING, MY FRIENDS, OR PAY DIRE CONSEQUENCES. I love alfredo sauce, but evidently it takes my body a little longer to digest it than I thought.  This morning’s run had the highlight of an excursion into the woods to expell the contents of my stomach.  Luckily, Beth is impervious to barf.  I like Beth.

Get off your butt, girl! June 15, 2007

Once again I vowed that I would get up to go to the gym, and once again I chose to ignore it’s calling.  I like to work out early in the morning, like around 5:30.  No kids to worry about, no hubby to neglect, just me and the whirr of treadmills. (I also like the gym because I can run an 8-minute mile on the treadmill, where in “real life” it’s more like 10min.)

I’m a smart person, and rationally I know that only I can get up and go to the gym.  I don’t have my own personal Bob Greene playing taps at the crack of dawn.  It almost would be easier if I was oversleeping, but I can’t even claim that.  I’m wide awake at 5:30. So what’s the problem?  A nice warm bed and a cuddly husband, that’s the problem.  Yes, you heard me, I blame it on the snuggles.  As I’m in the hospital having my quadruple bypass, I’ll point a shaking finger at my husband and say in a wavering voice, “It’s … all … your … fault …  You … spoon … too … good …”  Throw in some flannel sheets and you’ll hear me say, “It’s only Kindergarten, she can miss another day of school.”

I do think it’s some sort of conspiracy.  Jeff and I have this, “So, what do you weigh?” thing going on.  I *prefer* to weigh less than him, but I usually don’t (I call it a boob handicap).  But recently, I have tipped the scales a precious 5 lbs lighter.  Could this be sabotage?  Does he know the power he wields?  I’m serious, I’m about ready to go sleep in the guest room.

What I really need is a buddy to go to the gym with.  When I run with Beth, the guilt of standing her up overpowers the desire to spoon my partner.  I had a buddy, she was my next door neighbor. But she didn’t have that overwhelming sense of guilt that I have (I would have made a much better Catholic than her) and I got stood up A LOT so I stopped asking her.  I’ve asked a few more friends. They are tickled until I tell them the time.  Then their excitement morphs to shock and they frantically search for an excuse (wimps).

I hate to exercise in the middle of the day because of a few simple yet compelling reasons:

1.  I hate to shower twice in one day.

2.  I would rather spend that time on horseback (it’s darn right cruel to ride the horse at 5:30am).

3. If I can’t be on horseback, I’d rather be with my girls.

4.  If I can’t be on horseback or with the girls, I’d rather be napping (see a common thread?)

So anyway, we’ll try again on Monday. Wish me luck!!
