Scout, Toby, or Raisin? June 13, 2007

Posted by kimayars Uncategorized Digg! this story! Digg! this story. , trackback

I’ve been considering changing my horse’s name.  His name from his previous owner is “Scout”, but he really doesn’t look like a “Scout”.  I like Toby a lot, mainly because it reminds me of this skit.  My friend Sherene suggested “Raisin” because he’s dark brown.  What do you think?:

Scout

We had a great ride today — mostly worked on him standing still for the mounting block, but after I got on there was much less AAAAAHHHH and more “Okay, I can do this. I can hold it together…”  He really is coming along nicely. We continued our work with counter-bends and helping him find a comfortable frame.  He is filling out nicely and turning into quite the handsome boy.

So, now that you know what he looks like, give me some name ideas!!

Won’t Scout get a complex if you change his name?

Hi Kim !
First of it intrigues me how you go about changing a horses name, don’t they get a bit confused ?

For some reason something called Scout reminds me of strange names actors give their kids …
Toby is a great Tram Engine and a good friend of Thomas, that’s the boys fault …
Raisin just doesn’t seem right, can’t say exactly why but I think it’s probably due to me not liking to eat them …

So now, I’ve dis’d all your names I’d better give a suggestion … best I can offer, going with the brown theme, and my boys current infatuation with Star Wars is Wookie !

Say hi to Jeff for me …

I’m sure this Scout isn’t from To Kill A Mockingbird since he’s a gelding and the character was a girl, but you made me say “awhhhh” to remember the story and the girl who played her in the movie.

If he’s named after anybody, it’s more likely Tonto’s horse from The Loan Ranger, though I think that Scout was a paint.

I’m not sure why this naming thing seems to happen when a horse changes hands. I’ve not noticed it among men but I only know one other that rides so it’s not a large sampling. This is much more like coming up with a nickname than really changing the horses name. At least that’s my understanding.

It actually isn’t that major to change a horse’s name. Like Jeff siad, you don’t really call them by there name a lot anyway. For example, if I stood at the top of the paddock and shouted “Scout!” I’d get the same response as if I shouted, “Booger!”. I kind of like, Wookie though.

Isn’t the “Loan Ranger” froma WaMu commercial???

I go for nice obvious names for animals. “Horse” sounds good to me. Or “Big, toothy, leggy, kicking animal” . . . or even “Please don’t hurt me”.

Joking aside, he doesn’t look like a wookie (not shaggy enough). Although he might be named after Tonto’s* horse, there’s nothing to stop you naming him after one of the characters from To Kill A Mocking Bird. So I’d go for Atticus.

* Lone Ranger Joke:
The Lone Ranger & Tonto are ambushed by a tribe of very hostile indians (/native Americans), and completely surrounded. As they close in, the Lone Ranger, looks across at Tonto, and with a tear in his eye, says,
“Well, old friend, it looks like we’re really in trouble here. You’ve been my faithful companion for years, and we’ve gotten out of some really tough scrapes, but I just can’t see how we’re going to get out of this one”
To which Tonto replies,
“What’s this we, paleface?!”

When I joined the 4-H club as a kid & was horse-less, one of the founding members gave me a pony. Her name was “Lucy”. She turned out to be a crazy b-yatch (yes, that’s what she was called soon enuf) like Lucy of Peanuts fame; or at least that’s what I thought every time she’d rear up, fall over backwards & roll on me. It reminded me of Lucy pulling the football out from Charlie Brown. Yes, she was a treat, and I wish I’d renamed her.

My dog Shiloh came with the name Lucy. (Don’t ask me why I get the Lucys) After I met her, I immediately renamed her because of past history with that cursed name. The gentle Shiloh name (okay forget “the battle of”) has run true to her mellow, happy personality. I never regretted it.

Long story, but I say if the name fits wear it. If it doesn’t exchange it for something that does!
