My little Raisin. June 24, 2007

So, believe it or not, the name “Raisin” has stuck.  Poor Scout will have to endure a very cute but rather humiliating name.

Today we had a VERY good ride, especially considering he hadn’t worked since Monday. Today I was a bit smarter than last time, and free-lunged him first. He was actually pretty mellow, so we proceded to tack up and get down to business.

At the mounting block he was the best he’s ever been. Keeping him soft on the right side with flexions really does seem to work. My guess is that he’s so tense and anxious that he moves away from the mounting block in anticipation.

His walk today was big but not rushed. He found his “comfy spot” in his frame rather quickly and gave me a few instances of true bend.  He also didn’t try and run away from my leg so much — far less skittering than before.

When we went off into trot, he was relaxed and soft.  After we circled half the arena he started to get worked up again, but this time when I used my seat to slow his tempo, he didn’t fight it so much.  He’s starting to catch on…

After the warm-up we worked on 3-loop serpentines with a counter-bend in the middle loop. I tried to concentrate on releasing when he softened to make sure that he got the reward he deserved.

We ended with canter departs in both directions and a nice stretchy circle. He has a wonderful honest stretch that he really seems to enjoy.

My next ride is Tuesday, and I’m going to attept the gym in the morning. Wish me luck!

It sounds like you are enjoying “Raisin”. Have a good work out this morning. No spooning, just get up and do it!
