Can a gelding be a drama queen? October 1, 2007
Posted by kimayars Arena Work (Horse)Ugh, my horse was a bit of a butt today. I had my lesson today, but unfortunately I haven’t ridden in a week. He was on the needy side (which to be honest is kind of cute) and was back to his old self under saddle of “AAAAAHHH! I’M GONNA DIE!” This time my trainer got on him. Her goal was simple: Was it fear? Or was he being a drama queen? It turns out my horse is a drama queen. It took a little tough love, but he began to understand that there’s no need to enroll in acting classes. So overall, it was a great lesson. I know him better now and have a slightly different approach to his AAAHHH! moments. Still gentle and firm, but a little bit more emphasis on the “firm”. On a positive note, he looks GREAT. He has some nice gaits that are developing very nicely. I’m very excited!
Last week was a hard week for me. I started a new part-time job, my daughter had a rough time at school, and my Thursday was so packed I had trouble finding time to pee. Couple that with no exercise and a heavy dose of stress, let’s just say I wasn’t exactly lovin’ life. But this week is going much better: Daughter is dealing well with the fact that first grade is mandatory, I’ve got a lighter schedule, and I’ve already ridden my horse once. So far, so good!
My goal is to get to the gym tomorrow and run 4 miles. We’ll see….

OK, so two things I get from this post . . .
1. Yes, a gelding can be a drama queen. This information will come in useful - one of the managers at one of my clients went to see the . . . uh . . . “vet” last Friday. He spend the whole of today’s meeting in full on drama queen mode, which now kinda figures. Let’s just say he’s no-longer quite the man he used to be. In fact, “gelding” is probably a closer description.
2. Find time to pee. There’s no telling where it’ll end if you don’t.
[...] So, you can imagine that I had a wonderful time on my horse today. He wasn’t nearly the butt he was on Monday, and we made a lot of progress on things. He gets REALLY uncomfortable when you don’t follow a pattern or do something predictable, so we spent the entire time being unpredictable — randomly changing directions, doing a circle somewhere else besides at the end of the arena, doing zig-zags, changing directions, and just being wiggly. The catch is, he has to stay on the aids. He’s not allowed to make decisions on where we go. I will handle all that. He just needs to listen. [...]
