Just be nice to turkeys. October 17, 2007

Here is our entertaining dinner conversation tonight.  The girls and I had pot roast, buttered noodles, and apples.

“Mom, this is good meat.”

“Thanks.”

“Mom, why are we mean to turkeys?”

“What do you mean?”

“Well, we eat them at Thanksgiving. Why do we do that?”

“Do you remember the story about the pilgrims? I think we try and eat like they did at the first Thanksgiving. I guess some people also like to eat turkeys.”

“That’s mean to the turkey.”

“I suppose so. If you want to have something else for Thanksgiving we could probably do that. But you are eating pot roast tonight.”

“What’s pot roast?”

“Cow.”

[Really wide eyes.] “Cow??”

“Yup.”

“But we can’t eat cows, cows give milk.”

“Well, only girl cows give milk.”

“So we eat the boy cows?”

“I think so.”

“Wow. Boy cows are delicious.”

At that point I blew my mouthful of food across the table trying to stifle my laughter.

What happened to my hot horse?  He was pooooookey today.  There was nothing under the hood.  Even when the neighbors started doing donuts with some dirt-bike-kind-of-thing he didn’t even shy.  I was shocked.  I tried to be understanding and just worked on simple suppling exercises. But then he decided to be naughty and death-spiral to the center of the arena.  I do not do death spirals.

But the horse that just brushing your leg against sent him into next week, was now taking rather aggressive leg thumps like a scritch on the withers.  I just don’t get it.  He’s on, or he’s off.  I need to find the middle.

I’ll keep an eye on him over the next few days. He’s not dull in anyway, and shows no sign of illness.  It’s possible that I need to up his grain a bit.  I dunno, we’ll have to see.

I find out that I’m oddly looking forward to the gym tomorrow.  Dare I hope that Sherene and I might hook up for another treadmill liaison?  I shudder when I think of the possibility…

Walk Breaks are for Wusses? October 17, 2007

Okay, I know this will get me in trouble…

Beth and I had a conversation this past Sunday about walk breaks.  While we both feel like walk breaks can be an integral part of training, we both also feel that taking walk breaks during a race is, well, not in the spirit of the race.

I will admit a few things:

But for me personally, when I run a race or a fun run, I try to do so without stopping. Which partially explains my anxiety for the LVHM.  Come Hell or high water, I’m going to try my hardest to finish without stopping.  When I train, I do so without stopping. If I have to walk, then that’s my signal to my body that we’re done.  (Although I have discovered recently that I can push myself pretty far.)  It’s a personal choice, and walk breaks makes me feel like I’m cheating.  I’m not saying that it IS cheating, only that for me personally it feels that way. It’s my personal challenge to finish any run I start out without stopping.  It boils down to pride, even to the sacrifice of a better training regiment.

Treadmills are fun! October 16, 2007

This morning I put Samantha in the KidZone at the gym (she didn’t even wave goodbye) and hit the treadmill with [drumroll please] SHERENE!  Yes, my long-time horseback riding buddy has now become “treadmill buddy”.  It’s the first time I’ve run on a treadmill where it was actually fun.  The highlight of our run was a story involving “two bald men trying to escape from your shirt”.  You’ll get that if you watch the “Tale of the Tape” episode of ‘Til Death.

I’m not sure what to do tomorrow. I think I’ll take a rest day and ride Rasyn.

EZ8 Running! October 15, 2007

Today I joined EZ8 Running!  We had our first session tonight, and started with a timed mile.  I ran it in 9:39 which I have to admit was a little disappointing. Now, mind you, I really didn’t know what I should have expected, and it was the fastest I have ever run a mile (I think). But for some reason I expected to be dazzled, and 9:39 didn’t seem dazzling. Not even a little bit of sparkle. But I guess that’s why I joined EZ8 Running…

We talked about running form and I realized that I run a bit too much on my toes. We also did 1/2 mile of a relay work that was pretty fun.  We finished off the evening with LOTS of lunges and squats.  My butt is going to be sore tomorrow.

Unfortunately, I’ll miss the next two sessions (Bunko one night, and daughter’s school open house the next night) so I hope to mimic the workouts on my own.
