Bend from the leg… October 15, 2007
Posted by kimayars Arena Work (Horse)I had a short but super lesson today with Rasyn. We got started a tad late but even with a short lesson I always seem to walk away with something valuable.
Today we focused on getting the bend from the leg and not from the inside rein. It’s REALLY hard not to use the inside rein. She also had me ride to the inside of the track which means that I couldn’t use the wall of the arena as my outside aid. I can already tell I’m going to be sore because I had to use my outside aids so much more than usual.
Rasyn was on fire when I first got him, and I had concerns that he might be too hot. I don’ t have those concerns any more. I found myself on more than one occasion thinking that maybe I should start carrying a whip. After all, it worked for Jeff.

Meet my friend, Farmer Blow October 13, 2007
Posted by kimayars RunThis morning Beth and I ran what has got to be the most beautiful run I have ever been on. In the beginning there was fog that slowly revealed gold and red leaves still on the trees while we ran down the trail. As it lifted during our run Mt. Si was silhouetted by the rising sun and lit up Rattlesnake Ridge is stunning colors of bright green, orange, and yellow. Near the end of our run an elk crossed the trail. We were reminded why we live where we do. Many times we were silent, just enjoying the beauty around us (and trust me, for Beth and I to be silent is rare).
It was hard to keep going today, probably because I drank two glasses of wine last night. But Beth kept our spirits high and pulled us through this one in the end.
And I must say I think I have the coolest husband in the world: I came home to eggs, hashbrowns, and brown sugar sausage. It smelled SO good and tasted even better! I am one happy girl right now.
With the cold weather, I was re-introduced to the farmer’s blow. I have this quirk in the form of a sensitive gag reflex. This is why I value Beth so much as a running partner — she doesn’t seem to mind. During almost every run, I gag. Normally I can keep running when it happens. Sometimes I need to stop. Regardless, it’s embarrassing and I’m not sure how to keep it from happening. I’m sure it’s from post-nasal drip (it never happens on the treadmill when I’m indoors) and occurs most often in the cold mornings. But, doing a farmer’s blow every so often to keep things clear seems to help. Schnark.
Beth’s on a well-deserved vacation next week so I’ll be running on my own. Eeek.

Hold it! October 11, 2007
Posted by kimayars Ramblings, RunSo I learned a valuable lesson today: empty the tank before you run.
I ran with Beth this morning, and I woke up a tad late. We also did laundry last night, so all my running pants were wet and I had to find my only pair of shorts (brrrrr!). As a result, I failed to completely let “nature take it’s course”. (My socks didn’t even match.)
If you have to crap while you run, you’ll feel like crap while you run. If it was just #1 I would have been fine — I probably would have found a discreet place to dump my load. But with #2, you just have to hold it. I have never been happier to get home.
On the positive side, I survived a 5-mile run at dark-o’clock. Beth and I have talked about investing in some highly reflective things to wear (are diamond earrings “highly reflective”?). It certainly couldn’t hurt. Street lights only go so far.
I get the day off tomorrow, and Saturday we’ll try for an 8-miler. Egads. You can bet that I’ll be making sure the tank is empty for that!
