I can hear Robin scream… February 19, 2008

It was such a beautiful day, and as if spreading hogsfuel for 2 1/2 hours wasn’t enough, I decided to start my spring yard clean-out!

I knew several things needed to be pruned, but I honestly didn’t know how. I stared at my gangly hydranga, pruners in-hand. As I lopped off the first branch, I could almost hearmy friend Robin scream all the way from Seattle, “Noooooooo!”

She’d be very disappoint in what I did to my plants today.  As I stood in front of an over-flowing yardwaste bin, I was ashamed at the damage I did. Yet, it was oddly satisfying…

Anyway, I hope I didn’t kill anything. The yard does look better. I guess we’ll find out in the spring!

Uh…just ran across this one..If you cut the hydrangeas at the right points (just above a bud pair on some stems and some older stems all the way to the ground), they’ll be okay and should still bloom this season. There are more “ins & outs” to hydrangea pruning than this, but I hope this gives you comfort.

Perhaps a pruning coaching session should happen in your future? Or at least go read the free pacific maritime pruning guides at plantamnesty.org!

Cheers!
