Wheeeeeee!… February 21, 2008
Posted by kimayars Arena Work (Horse)I was so excited to ride my horse today. The sun is shining, the birds are singing,… You get the idea. I groomed him and then turned him loose in the pasture so he can “crack his back”. He loves to run and is quite playful. I find that if I turn him out before my lesson for even just a few minutes he’s much easier to work with.
So, I followed my normal routine and he did his: bucked a few times, cantered around, rolled, and then settled down to graze. I got my gear in order and then grabbed the halter to bring him back in. He was out in pasture for about 10 minutes.
As soon as I started walking towards him, I knew he had other things in mind…
About 20 minutes later, he’s still running around like a fool, not really running away, just cantering around me. My attempts to stop him were fairly futile. If I tried to use the fenceline to stop him, he just changed directions. It was almost as if he were saying, “Isn’t this fun? Look at me! Whee!” I have to admit, he has a gorgeous trot and is quite the handsome fellow.
So finally, the game over, he allowed me to catch him. It’s now 10am, and my lesson should be starting now. Instead I have a sweating, dirty, still highly animated horse. As my trainer gets out of her car I shout, “Do you have the lungeing cavesson?”…
So, we lunged today. I was a tad disappointed at first, but it turned into a really great lesson. My trainer helped me move Tigger in and out of different frames, and how/when to ask for canter correctly. These are all things that I’ve neglected to learn, and I honestly can’t get enough of watching my horse from the ground.
So, certainly not the day I had planned, but fabulous none-the-less. And Tiago got a good workout too. He was so sweaty it took me a good 45 minutes to get him dry once again (I think coolers are one of the best inventions of all time). But he seemed happy, content, and relaxed afterwards. He’s such a good boy.
