Hogsfuel: The New IT February 18, 2008

This morning I headed over to Sherene’s place for an invigorating workout of spreading hogsfuel. The arena had taken a beating this winter, and Sherene had ordered some materials (crushed gravel & hogsfuel) for some repair work. Unfortunately, those things don’t spread themselves.

Thankfully, Sherene’s neighbor is an all-around great guy and also owns a tractor. He skillfully (and quickly) took care of removing the old hogsfuel in the arena and laid the crushed gravel down. About 30 tons of it, I believe.

But today Sherene and I started putting the hogsfuel in place. By hand. One wheelbarrow at a time. About two-and-a-half hours later, we were only about half-way through the huge mound. I must say, I got a good workout. Especially my back and my obliques. And the arena (or what’s done so far) is gorgeous. I can’t wait to ride in it!

Today was a fabulous day, as you can tell by this cutie snapshot of Tigger:

Sometimes I just have one of those days. This morning was one of them.

Beth and I got up this morning at 6:45 to catch in a run.  It had to be quick so I could get back by 7:30 to help get the girls off to school.

For whatever reason, I pretty much gagged the whole entire way.  The run turned into a walk. Stomach is still a bit crampy today. Can’t figure out what happened. It was a beautiful morning, though. Poor Beth, having to put up with that.

Hmmm… What does this button do? February 14, 2008

In an effort to not repeat “scary run” from Tuesday, I came prepared:

1.  New running shoes (I decided break in Mizunos) — CHECK!
2.  Water bottle — CHECK!
3.  Sherene — CHECK!
4.  A curiousity to play with the treadmill buttons — CHECK!

The treadmill I ran on today has this button called “Fitness Trainer”.  I’m sure this must make most personal trainers roll their eyes, but a year of wondering what it did got the best of me today.  I pressed the button and saw, “Continue pressing to customize workout.” Neat. I complied and discoverd something called “5K Train”. Super-neat. I selected it. It then asked me what level I wanted (on a scale of 1-10). I couldn’t bring myself to select “1″, so I selected “2″.  I set my speed at 6.0 mph and away we went…

I didn’t fully comprehend that the treadmill was adjusting the incline until I nearly fell off the back of it. I need to make a mental note to clip on the “stop if you fall off” thingies.

My run was kind of fun, and I felt that I got a good workout even in just 30 minutes.  I couldn’t help but laugh when the incline would reduce itself. Almost every time I would run into the front support of the treadmill.  I’m not used to the treadmill being an active participant in my workout. My coup de gras was that this meant the entire 5k was uphill.  Treadmills certainly don’t do downhill.

If your treadmill has this feature, then give it a whirl.  I have Sherene to entertain me. You might need something more (because I DEFINITELY am not letting anyone else have her).  :-D

Happy Valentine’s Day!

I had a great lesson with Tigger today.  My trainer introduced me to the longeing cavesson. I had never used one before, telling myself that longeing cavessons were for professionals. I normally longe in the bridle with the line through the near bit ring, over the poll, and clipped to the far bit ring. Turns out this technique is not what my boy needs.

He was SO much more forward.  Most of his work was long and low (which I want him to do on the line), and he was so much more relaxed.  I gotta get me one of these things. Seriously it was like day and night. I almost feel like I had been abusing him using the bridle.  He went the full 20m out — he’s never done that before.

I gotta get one.
