…it can happen to me.

Ricardo Amaya passed away after the accident mentioned in the above article.  A short obituary was in this month’s Dressage Today.  I must admit, while dealing with my own anxiousness with Tigger, it didn’t help to see this.  Rarely do I hear of anyone killed while schooling a horse. It’s an unforunate and devastating accident, that reminds me that horses are live animals with free will.

My heart goes out to his wife and children. I can’t fathom a loss like that.

Ground work sounds right up my ally right now…

To put a little perspective on it, he died from head injuries and apparently he was not wearing a helmet… you ALWAYS wear a helmet.

And I’ve heard of plenty of joggers who have been hit and killed by cars… Accidents/tragedies do happen sometimes, but you take all sorts of precautions to minimize risk (riding with a helmet, paying close attention to TIgger’s mood and adjusting your work with him accordingly, not firing a gun from his back, etc…).

That being said, I do know how you feel. I certainly do not like the fact that being hurt or killed doing something I enjoy is a real possibility. But I think we both err on the side of caution, which minimizes the risk and maximizes the possibility for someone to call us a chicken. I’d rather be a chicken than in traction, eh?

Just a word from your local ray of sunshine! :-P
