Oh yeah, that exercise thing… June 17, 2008
Posted by kimayars RamblingsWhy is it I can only focus on one thing at a time? I finally rode Tigs Monday, and today I was supposed to run. Did I run? Nope. Tigger got a nice massage, though. He likes those.
The plan today was this:
9am: Tigger gets his massage
11:50am: Kim gets her back cracked at the chiropractor
1:00pm: Kim & Sherene run at the gym
3:30pm: Kim picks up daughter from school, takes her to gymanstics.
5:30pm: Gymanstics is over, Kim takes girls home after relaxing with a magazine during class.
6:30pm: Kim prepares and serves a fabulous, nutritious meal that her family swoons over.
Here’s what actually happened:
9am: Tigger gets his massage
11:50am: Kim gets her backed cracked at the chirporactor
12:10pm: Kim realizes that she has no snacks for between school and gymnastics, so she heads to grocery store.
12:30pm: Kim calls Sherene. A mutual lunch date is scheduled instead of the run.
1:00pm: Kim arrives at Sherene’s, sandwiches and Starbucks in hand.
2:00pm: Kim goes on a hunt for blue eye shadow for daughter’s dress rehearsal (which she just remembered).
3:00pm: Kim uses last little bit of time to get batteries replaced in two clocks she’s had in her purse since February.
3:30pm: Kim picks up 2nd daughter and drives to gymnastics.
4:00pm: Kim drops off 1st daughter at gymnastics and takes 2nd daughter to Target to continue quest for blue eye shadow.
4:30pm: Blue eye shadow located. It’s just as hideous as Kim remembers. Daughter is thrilled.
5:15pm: Return to gymnastics only to be serenaded by daughter with “I’m bored, I’m bored, I’m bored, I’m bored…”
5:30pm: Gymnastics is over.
6:15pm: Both daughters are FINALLY loaded in the car.
6:30pm: Arrive home. Realize that there is no food to cook dinner with.
8:00pm: Family sits down to eat a smorgasborg of leftovers (asparagus, pizza, chicken nuggets, noodles).
And there you have it, a hectic yet minimally productive day.
What has kind of put the fork in all this is that I was supposed to meet Kristi at the gym tomorrow morning. Instead she cancelled because she went today (we were supposed to be going M/W/F). I think we got our wires crossed because I got a definite “F-U” feeling from her on the phone. Anywho, I should go to the gym in the morning, but I know that my motivation at that time of day is not stellar, especially alone. I do not have time to run later in the day, unless I want to sacrfice riding Tigger. That isn’t going to happen. So I feel that once again I’m on that slippery slope, being in danger of falling off the wagon.
We’ll see what tomorrow brings…
I RODE MY HORSE! June 16, 2008
Posted by kimayars Arena Work (Horse)Woo-hoo! I rode my horse, I rode my horse, I rode my horse, I RODE MY HORSE!
Can you tell I’m excited?
It felt SO good to get back in the saddle. I really missed it. Tigger was great today. I lunged first to get a few sillies out then REALLY took my time mounting. After a few antsy moments, he stood perfectly still, even when I picked up my right stirrup. When I put my leg on, he calmy walked off. Yahoo!
We had a great lesson, and spent the time making a string of basic successes for him. We started off with some gentle bending at the walk, then worked on some small spirals at the trot. Finally, we capped off the lesson with canter both directions. He’s lost some of his strength in his topline, but did give it some honest effort. I had a really good time.
The rest of the day pretty much sucked, but my ride from the morning kept a smile on my face. *sigh* What’s a world without horses?…
You want to do what for Father’s Day?… June 15, 2008
Posted by kimayars UncategorizedI was sure that Jeff would want to go for a bike ride for Father’s Day. What I didn’t realize was that he wanted ALL of us to go. I have autobicycliaphobia, better known as “fear of riding in traffic”.
The plan was we were all going to ride our bikes down to the local bakery, have a snack, maybe visit the bike shop, and then ride home. Jeff was going to take Samantha in the side car and I would take Veronica with the tag-a-long. After much protesting by Veronica, Jeff became the lucky man to take both Veronica and Samantha.
We headed down our hill and out of the development. My first adreneline burst came when we had to negotiate the round-a-bout. Luckily, traffic was light so we kind of slipped in and slipped out. Our next challenge was a light with a right-hand turn lane. We were going straight, so we had to be in the lane just to the left of the turn lane. My greatest fear was realzied: we were in traffic, in the front, with a red light. I imagined that as soon as that light turned green, a caucaphony of horn-honking and angry drivers would descend upon us as I strugged to get out of 2nd gear. Panic.
Of course, the only thing that really happened was we got buzzed by a Prius. Those things are pretty much toy cars anyway, so my nerves calmed a little. I might survive this bike trip after all…
As you have probably guessed, I did survive. I even managed to keep my cool through a left-hand turn lane. I also learned several things today;
- Jeff really appreciates me riding. I got several “I’m so proud of you!” that day.
- Biking is SO much faster than running. This is nearly the same route that Beth and I run. I’m thinking next time Beth can run and I’ll bike.
- Cars aren’t TOO scary, but I don’t think I can put my autobicycliaphobia to rest just yet.
- My seat sucks. My butt is sore. Need new seat.
So when will I go again? Well, certainly not until my butt heals. But I may try this again sooner than I once thought…
Darth Vader and … Emily? June 15, 2008
Posted by kimayars RamblingsThe girls got Jeff a Star Wars lego set (Rogue Shadow) for Father’s Day. It comes with three figures: Darth Vader, Juno Eclipse, and Starkiller. Except, this is how the girls have been playing with it:
In the darkest voice a 7-year-old girl can muster: “I am Darth Vader! I am going to cut off your head!”
5-year-old waves Starkiller in the air: “I am Emily! And you can’t catch me!”
(Jeff casts her a glance out of the corner of his eye. “Emily?”, he thinks, “Who’s Emily?”)
Bear in mind, neither child has seen any of the Star Wars movies.
The battle continued, and Emily held her own pretty well. I think she was resurrected from the dead about 4-5 times. Vader’s hand was severed at least seven times but successfully reattached (ah, the beauty of Legos). Juno Eclipse was re-named Jasmine and proved to be a formiddable opponent to Vader as well. I think I could hear Lucas groaning.
The state of my horse is unknown. With dance recitals, dress rehearsals, company picnics, safety fairs, and work schedules I’ve only been able to steal away a few fleeting moments with Tigger. Just enough to give him a treat and a few scratches, and to let him know his mommy still loves him. I’m hoping the shoulder isn’t sore anymore.
Running has also fallen by the wayside. There has just been too much going on this week.
Next week is the last week of school and many of the girls’ activities and my responsibilities will be dropping off the schedule. After the 25th, I will just have work and the girls’ gymnastics to deal with. I believe that I will be able to start breathing regularly after that.
So, tomorrow starts a new week beginning with a lesson on Tigger (hopefully!) — CHARGE!
*poof* (part 2) June 11, 2008
Posted by kimayars UncategorizedIt’s just one of those weeks I guess…
I started lunging Tigger today just as my instructor showed up. We were just heading to the left when she walked up and said, “He looks off.” I looked closer and noticed that he was favoring the right a little. Then I noticed a slight head bob. Tigger is smooth enough that he has virtually no head bob when trotting. But, I convinced myself that it was just him being stiff, uneven footing, I didn’t have him properly bent, he had a rock in his shoe, etc… We stopped him and felt for heat and (luckily) his legs & feet were stone cold. We picked his feet for good measure and sent him on.
It was still there. Subtle, but there. Hmm… What should I do? Call it? Ride anyway? I was kind of torn.
So, I sent him on to the right. There was no doubt anymore, he was off on the left, probably somewhere in the shoulder. His left knee wasn’t breaking and the head bob was more pronounced.
Dammit.
On one hand I’m glad I have an instructor who is very observant and attune to the horse. She didn’t make money from my lesson today and could have asked me to get on to see if it would loosen up over time. I love her ethics. Instead of a lesson I got a good dose of sympathy from her (which I needed).
On the other hand, I’m very discouraged. I took the time off from work to FINALLY get back in the saddle and be able to do it without rushing. I guess it just wasn’t meant to be. I’ll check back in a day or two and see how he’s doing. Hopefully he’ll be sound for my lesson on Monday.
Instead I trimmed his bridle path and gave him a tennis ball massage (he’s seems to really enjoy those). We did some belly lifts and a few stretches, then I turned him out on grass. I think overall he was happy with the day’s events. I was a bit dissatisfied.
