Beginner? Advanced Beginner? Intermediate? July 2, 2008

Just what the heck is my running level?

I’m toying around with running a 10k in August.  I’d like to train for it, so I “Googled” training for a 10k.  I found on eHow a few charts that seemed to be what I was looking for.  The first link I found was for beginners.  Ah hah! This is what I need.  But as I looked over the chart, I realized that I’m pretty much already doing that program. In fact, I’m doing it fairly easily.  Hmmm…  I clicked on the “Advanced Beginner” link.  The mileage was up a little, but it was still basically the same.  Should I possibly tackle the “Intermediate” level program?

Egads.  The intermediate level program has you doing things like tempo runs and intervals.  I know what intervals are but the concept of tempo runs escapes me: “run near your 10k pace but not at your 10k pace”.  What?  How do I know what my 10k pace is?  Or is it my desired pace? Hmmm…  And if I follow this program, is 4 weeks enough time to see any difference?

Why is this so hard?  You run, you get better. Right?  Like dieting, there seem to be finer points that are lost on newbies like myself.

So anyway, I’m going to try the “Intermediate” level program:

Week Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday Sunday
1 CT or Rest 4 x 400 IW 3 m run 30 min tempo Rest 4 m run 30 min EZ
2 CT or Rest 5 x 400 IW 3.5 m run 35 min tempo Rest 5 m run 35 min EZ
3 CT or Rest 6 x 400 IW 3.5 m run 35 min tempo Rest 6 m run 35 min EZ
4 CT or Rest 7 x 400 IW 4 m run 40 min tempo Rest 6 m run 40 min EZ
5 CT or Rest 8 x 400 IW 4.5 m run 40 min tempo Rest 7 m run 40 min EZ
6 CT or Rest 8 x 400 IW 4.5 m run 40 min tempo Rest 7.5 m run 45 min EZ
7 CT or Rest 6 x 400 IW 4 m run 40 min tempo Rest 8 m run 45 min EZ
8 CT or Rest 3 m run 40 min tempo run 3 m run Rest Rest 10K Race!

Any feedback is welcome.  I think I will start at week 1 and go from there.  Then whatever happens, happens!

This is a pretty nice way to figure it out. This is how I figured out I was intermediate.
