Run cancelled due to…lightning? July 3, 2008

Beth and I had a run scheduled this morning. I got up, oddly rested. Got dressed, ambled downstairs, put on the ForeRunner. Then I heard the rain…

“Screw it,” I thought, “It’s 65 degrees. The rain will feel good.”

Then it REALLY started raining.

I texted Beth: “Wait 5min for it to let up?”
“Sounds good,” she replied.

Then we heard thunder. Then I SAW a flash immediately followed by a big crack (which means it’s close).

Beth: “I think run w/ thunder is bad. Sorry!”
Kim: “So do I!”

Electrical storms are rare where we live, but last night’s and this morning’s was really impressive. Jeff and I watched it for an hour last night before bed. It’s so beautiful.

So, we rescheduled for Friday morning. We’ll run for an hour, wherever it takes us.

After climbing back into bed, I think Jeff was on the verge of giving me a hard time. I would simply have suggested he go for a ride on his steel bike.

Opting not to run in a storm with lightning is probably a very Sensible Decision - if you want to put some zing into your day, a cup of really strong coffee is always preferable to a couple of million joules of static electricity :-D

Oh, and I thought you’d like to know that my first real bike was called Lightning. And my second, but that one got stolen. Grrrr!

I am originally from Mass. I know someone who about 20 yrs ago was hit & killed by lightning while doing his regular run on what is called the “heartbreak hill” area of Newton, MA. It hit the tree he was running by and went up through him. Thankfully a Dr. was looking out of his window at the time and saw what happened. He was actually dead but they revived him and he lived. Although - he was never quite “right” after that.

Good choice!!
