I tried, honest! October 31, 2008
Posted by kimayars UncategorizedI wrote an update to my progress (or lack thereof) with The Zone, but I must hav messed something up because now I can’t find it. I am challenged in these ways.
So anyway, this will catch things up:
- I rode my horse three times this week. When I ride Sunday (and yes, I will ride) that will make 4 rides this week! I am very proud of that as I really had to squeeze one in this week. Riding is an outlet for me, and I am a MUCH happier person when I can spend time with my pony.
- I am convinced that 11 blocks on The Zone is going to make me hungry, cranky, and a pain to be around. Given that I have a rather large event on Saturday for the non-profit I work for (it is our largest fund raiser) I decided to postpone being crabby until Monday. But I am working out a plan, and will move forward. I hate this body. (Size 8…size 8…size 8…) My “Yoga for Equestrians” DVD came in. I plan to do that on my “rest days”.
- I am going to run the Rock ‘n Roll Half Marathon in June of ‘09. Time to dig out my “Super Kim” cape. I’m hoping to convince someone else to do it with me (and you know who you are!).
- This is the most peaceful Halloween yet, as deaf dogs can not hear doorbells.
That’s really about it. This weekend I will be detailing out my food and exercise plan for the week. In fact, I’ll post it Sunday night. Nothing like accountability, eh?
Happy Halloween!
Kim enters The Zone… October 24, 2008
Posted by kimayars Uncategorized…and exits with a handful of M&M’s.
I have decided to try The Zone as an “eating lifestyle”. I’ve heard a lot of people say good things about it. What none of them have said so far is that it was easy. So I went as far to take my measurements and determine that I need 11 blocks of protein. That sets me up nicely for 3 blocks at breakfast, 3 blocks at lunch, 3 blocks at breakfast, and two 1-block snacks. Now to figure out what that exactly means…
My oldest daughter got strep on Wednesday, so I wasn’t able to ride Tigger (or do much else, for that matter). I haven’t heard how it went but Sherene said that he looked pretty decent. My daughter is doing much better, so that’s a plus. It does make you feel helpless when your wee ones are sick.
Speaking of my oldest daughter, she wants to do the Seattle Kids Marathon. I’m game, so here we go!
Starting to lose it… October 22, 2008
Posted by kimayars UncategorizedThe calorie counting thing is getting old. I’m tired, cranky, and hungry. I’m going to take a second look at The Zone. It’s just so much work, though. I’m worried that I can’t maintain it. I guess all you can do is try, right?

Damn That Hip October 22, 2008
Posted by kimayars UncategorizedI had my lesson with Cindy yesterday, and everything went really well until…my hip fatigued. I’ve been working very hard on my position lately, and part of that includes getting my right hip “unstuck”. I tend to collapse it, and since it’s my dominant side, it nearly has a will of its own. About 35-minutes into the lesson, I couldn’t get the hip open anymore. Man, I feel so old.
So I’m in search of some hip flexibility and strengthening exercises. I ordered two DVD’s on Yoga for Equestrians. I’m hoping that will lend some insight.
Tigger was fabulous, as usual. We were working on shoulder-in when I lost the right hip. Once that went he was confused as to where to be. I backed off to something simpler so that he could end on a “win”.
Argh. I am definitely feeling like I need to play a little catch-up to my horse.
Pony Power October 20, 2008
Posted by kimayars UncategorizedIt was a gorgeous day today, and luckily I got to ride my horse this morning.
Today we worked on staying soft to the inside and not inverting. He has kind of a natural upright neck (not like a Friesian, but a bit baroque) so to carry himself inverted in natural for him. However, he CAN carry himself round, and quite well too. His fitness level has just won him the grand prize of being expected to stay round, so I’ve been uppping the pressure on him to stay soft at the poll. He was nicely forward and willing.
In general he felt really good, and I had a moment of probably the most powerful trot I’ve experienced yet. He wasn’t rushing and trying to faster, but when I put leg on him he got bigger. It’s hard to explain, but suffice it to say the quality of trot got better. Much better. It did go to Hell when I switched directions (poo on the track didn’t help — he’s a bit of a princess, even if it is HIS poo).
I’ve been considering doing some different things with him. Hidden River Ranch in Sultan does horse soccer a few days a week. I’m tempted… Of course, I may regret it as Tigger runs screaming in terror from the 40″ soccer ball.
I’m looking forward to my lesson with Cindy tomorrow. I’m hoping we can work more on the quality of his trot and maybe some more canter work. Fun, fun, fun!
The Henrick Johansen clinic dates have been set for 11/15 and 11/16. This has eliminated the agonizing decision of whether or not to do a schooling show that weekend. Hah!
