We’re going steady! November 29, 2007
Posted by kimayars Ramblings, Las Vegas Half MarathonSherene made me a tape today! I think that means we’re exclusive…
Seriously, she made me an “inspirational” CD for my run/jog/walk/crawl/whimper on Sunday. The songlist includes:
- Titles by Vangelis
- I Run Faster Thank You Can by Faris Nourallah
- I Will Survive by Gloria Gaynor
- Don’t Stop Believin’ by Journey
- I Ran (So Far Away) by A Flock Of Seagulls
- Run To You by Bryan Adams
- Running by No Doubt
- Act I: Run Away! from Monty Python’s Spamalot
- Act II: Brave Sir Robin from Montey Python’s Spamalot
- Keep Yourself Alive by Queen
- It’s Not Over by Daughtry
- (Don’t Fear) The Reaper by Blue Oyster Cult
- Stayin’ Alive by The Bee Gees
- Born to Run by Bruce Springsteen
- Livin’ La Vida Loca by Ricky Martin
- Savin’ Me by Nickelback
- Broken by Lifehouse
- I Need Some Sleep by Eels
- Home by Daughtry
It’s a wonderfully satirical commentary on how the run will probably go. What’s even more impressive is that Sherene didn’t know that one of the water stations at the LVHM will be staffed by the cast from Spamalot. I’m just so touched that she took the time to do this, and will REALLY enjoy it during the race. I hope I don’t scare anyone when I burst out laughing during tracks 8 and 9. Anyway, it’s already downloaded to my Sansa and ready for action! I just wish I was!
So tomorrow we’re off to Vegas. Saturday we’re just going to relax and enjoy some of the sights on the Strip. Sunday is the race, and then we return home later that day. Expect a race report late Sunday night or Monday evening. I feel pretty well relaxed. Our only concern right now is how to get Hammer Gel on the plane. I think Jeff is going to stop by REI in the morning and pick up a few packs for me to ease our trip through TSA.
My strategy for the race is to survive. I will try and use my ForeRunner to start with a resonable pace. My goal is a 10min/mile average. If I can finish in 2:30:00 then I will be ecstatic. Hopefully Beth and I will both be having a good day on Sunday and we can enjoy a good run. But even if it doesn’t pan out that way, I’m excited just to be doing it. It will be a nice little feather in my cap!
And I have packed the cape.
I’m just still so tickled to have the CD. It will be so cool to have Sherene with me. Having a lock of her hair in my pocket that I cut secretly while she was sleeping also helps. It smells puuuuuurty. (She’s probably officially creeped out now and won’t talk to me for a few days.)
Off, into the wild blue yonder!
The Stand-In Running Buddy October 28, 2007
Posted by kimayars Run, Las Vegas Half MarathonToday Jeff was my stand-in running buddy. Except that he didn’t run. He biked. Not that I’m complaining. It was so much better having someone with you, especially for those last few miles.
We’re in Bremerton right now with my parents so it was a different run that was pretty in a different way than I’m used to. My parents live just a stone’s throw from Dyes Inlet on the Kitsap penninsula so today we were treated to water views instead of the usual valley views of the foothills. The highlight of my run was when we ran by my parents’ house. They plus the girls were waving and cheering as I went by (this was at mile 7). It brought a smile to my face and put a spring in my step (albeit a small one).
I hit the wall about mile 8. There were two hills in this run, and most of my runs have been flat. The nice thing about having Jeff there was he carried my water and some Hammer Gel that I drank at mile 5. Fueling during these long runs definitely make a difference. But those last two miles was pure willpower. But my body just aches. I did not walk, and I’m darn proud of it.
The funniest part of the run was at about mile 4, I jokingly asked Jeff if he was holding up okay (keep in mind he’s riding his bike). He seriously answered me with a complete run down of how his body was holding up. I kind of had to roll my eyes, but it was kind of cute. (But not that cute.)
So overall, a nice run. I was super happy to have Jeff with me and how often can you have your own personal cheering section?

Reaching for that 8-minute mile… October 22, 2007
Posted by kimayars General Cardio, Run, Las Vegas Half MarathonI went to my EZ8 Running class tonight and had a great time. There’s something fun about working out with a great group of people. Kimbrough, our coach, has an infectious enthusiasm that makes it fun. She reminded me that the 12th annual Pumpkin Push is this Saturday. I’m kind of tempted. So tempted, that in the few minutes it took me to think about it, I registered. So I guess I’m doing a 5K on Saturday morning… Jeff’s going with me, and is going to take the kids on the 2.5 mile family walk. I think it will be lots of fun. Evidently, everyone leaves with their very own pumpkin… Good heavens, I hope I don’t have to run with it. Anyone want to join us?
Today was an odd day. School was cancelled for Veronica because our bus fleet was vandalized last night. (Bastards.) But I have to admit hangin’ with Veronica was fun. She was patient while I watched Sherene ground drive her horse (which was really impressive), and she was very helpful when we went grocery shopping. (”Mommy, I think you’re missing something — chocolate.”) She was a bit confused when we had to go rescue Jeff after he broke his rear derailer/derailleur. (I asked Jeff how to spell that. “Isn’t there a French spelling?” I asked. “Yes,” he says, “but I don’t use it.”) Hopefully, there will be school tomorrow, but tonight Veronica was complaining of a sore throat and felt a bit warm. It may be another stay home day again.
I find myself fantasizing about another fun treadmill liaison with Sherene tomorrow. Dare I hope?…

PANIC!!! September 21, 2007
Posted by kimayars Ramblings, Las Vegas Half MarathonJeff just made our flight reservations for Las Vegas for the LVHM. ERCK! I’m so gonna die…
Day 1 of “What Have I Done” September 17, 2007
Posted by kimayars Run, Las Vegas Half MarathonToday was my first offiicial training day for the Las Vegas Half Marathon. I modified the Sweat365 Beginners Training Plan so that Sundays were my “long days”. I’m also going to squeeze an extra run in this week, so instead of taking 3 days off I’ll only take off two. Here’s the plan:
- Monday (today) - 4 miles
- Tuesday - rest
- Wednesday - 4 miles
- Thursday - 4 miles
- Friday - rest
- Saturday - 4 miles
- Sunday - 5 miles
Beth will join me on Thursdays and Sundays (I’ll need her as those runs get longer) and the rest will probably be done at the gym.
We both came back soaked — it was drizzling this morning and we’ve got a nice level of “damp” going on. It probably didn’t help that I got sprayed by a passing truck. My right side is not only wet but a bit muddy too. Next time I’ll make Beth run closer to the road.
We did finish todays run with the “Hill to Hemlock” which made us feel incredibly sick, but also incredibly happy. We were fondly remembering when we couldn’t run 2 miles without walking. Now we’re finishing with a HILL. Rock on.
