Killing Me Softly July 20, 2008

I had a great run with Beth today. Not great in that it all felt good, but great in that I felt like I really pushed myself. The plan was to run out 2.5 miles and back. By the time we got to the entrance of our development I was totally pooped, yet we still had 0.2 miles to go. I waved her on and decided to call it a day even though I was short of my running goal. I did a quick calculation (actually I just looked at my Forerunner, but when you’re that tired doing anything feels like a calculation) and realized we ran a 9:47 pace in 4.8 miles.

Then I got this nagging little voice in my head. It said one word: WIMP

I started thinking. I’ve done so well on the run so far, an amazing slow last 0.2 miles was still going to make a good time for me. There was only one problem. The last bit would be up “Hemlock Hill” (I call it this because even though it runs along Forster Blvd, it ends at Hemlock and it’s about as fun as poison).

Screw it.

I turned the Forerunner on and ran up the hill and then some to get in the full 5 miles. Yay me!

So I’m sitting here being all stinky, sweaty, tingly, and tired, but happy that I pushed it that little bit. If I keep pushing those little bits then hopefully I’ll get my mileage back up.

On a side note, Beth commented that I ran faster when we ran later. I replied that I was only trying to keep up with her. She laughed and said, no, she was trying to keep up with me. So our blistering pace was a result of each of us trying to stay with the other. Too funny!

Here are our splits just for fun. Not bad for crossing two traffic lights, a roundabout, and a freeway off-ramp:

Mile 1 - 9:52
Mile 2 - 9:16
Mile 3 - 10:28 (stopped to walk while I caught my breath)
Mile 4 - 9:25
Mile 5 - 10:10 (this was the hill)

Overall, a good run!

And today’s workout is… July 14, 2008

I got up this morning at 6am to head to the gym. Normally I meet Kristi there but I had an inkling she wouldn’t be there. (She wasn’t. No big deal, I need to start doing this stuff on my own anyway.)

Just as I was heading out the door I remembered that I needed to look at my 10k training plan so I knew what to run today. I fired up the computer, fumbled with the mouse, and after what seemed to be an eternity for the web page to load, found my training chart. My somewhat bleary vision found the Monday column. Underneath it said:

REST

I cracked up.

Needless to say I didn’t go back to bed like my training plan was obviously instructing me to do. I shuffled off to the gym and ran for 40 minutes. It felt pretty decent. Not too tired, but not too fresh either. It was a good start.

I discovered that I had a long-forgotten playlist on my Sansa titled, “Stairmaster”. I flipped that on and ran to a very disjointed eclectic playlist. There was everything from Scorpions, to Bon Jovi, to Brooks & Dunn, to Green Day, to The Squeeze. I must have been smokin’ crack when I made that one up.

Anyway, it looks to be a good day. Hopefully I can get out of work today at noon and get out to ride Tigs this afternoon.

4-mile “tempo” with Beth July 6, 2008

I’m still not really sure what a tempo run was but I think this was it…

Our original plan was to run 7mi today: We would start from our development, run to Sherene’s house where I would feed the horses, then run back.  Unfortunately the weather was cold and drizzly, and neither of us felt like running for that long.

Instead we hopped in the car, fed the horses, then drove up to Rattlesnake Lake to run out 2mi on the John Wayne Trail.  It wasn’t too bad given that it’s all uphill the way out:

Mile 1 - 10:25
Mile 2 - 10:32
Mile 3 - 9:31
Mile 4 - 8:58

As we were heading up the trail from the parking lot, we heard a bunch of voices. Then out of the bushes came about 30 runners, each with a number pinned on.  A friendly-looking guy was walking close behind and eagerly asked Beth and I if we were here for the “early start”.

Turns out they had a marathon scheduled that morning.  It’s the second year of the “Rattlesnake Lake Marathon“.  They don’t have a half yet, but do have a 10mi and a 16mi.  Might have to keep that in mind for next year.  It looks like they have a couple of cute ones (if you’re into that kind of thing).  Go to www.littlemarathon.com to check them out.

I also “lubed the boob” today.  (Jeff’s gonna blush when he reads that.)  Seriously, I used some of his Chamios Butt’r to try and stave off the rubbing/rawness/bleeding problem I’m having with my undergarments. So far, it appears to have worked!  Hallelujah!

Off to go ride the horse in a bit…

200…and counting! July 4, 2008

I celebrated Independence Day by hitting 200 miles for the year today. I’m now wondering if I crank it up if I can run 500 miles for the entire year. It might be an interesting challenge… I’ll have to work out how many miles per week I have to run in order to make that goal.

Todays run was good but they’re still a little tough. Being 75 and REALLY muggy didn’t help much either. We haven’t had any lightning since yesterday, so that’s a plus.

Later today my plan is go to lunge Tigger. Riding is out of the question since there is a high likelyhood of some sort of pyrotechnics near the arena. I just really don’t feel like schooling that today and to be honest it seems a little foolish. By lunging hopefully I’ll take some of the edge off him for tonight. None of the horses will rest easy, I’m sure.
