The best shoes EVER. November 8, 2008
Posted by kimayars UncategorizedWatching Veronica run has made concerned about her feet. She pronates like her father, and it look painful and weird. She hasn’t complained about any pain, but you can definitely tell that this will cause problems later on unless she gets some support.
I took her shopping at our local Foot Zone but they didn’t carry running shoes in her size. The salesman recommended that we look at GI Joes since they have kids’ shoes. However, we’re out of season for running. As I left the Foot Zone I spotted our new REI store. It was worth a look since they were just a block away.
What we found were trail running shoes in her size. And she loves them. They are the perfect shoes for her out here since we do a lot of “off road” stuff, they have good traction, and a wide base for stability. Plus, they have excellent arch support:
She’s worn them for three days straight, and slept with them the first night. She says they are the best shoes ever.
We have now logged a total of 6 miles toward the Seattle Kids’ Marathon!
Ticking them off… November 6, 2008
Posted by kimayars UncategorizedWe ticked another mile off for the Seattle Kids Marathon at Centennial Fields. This was especially entertaining because we did “The Wiggles” the whole way. You know, the moves to “Fruit Salad” and our favorite, “Hot Potato”. It was like a mobile aerobics class for me. The kids were laughing the whole entire way, yet we beat our previous time with a new PR of 21 minutes. Veronica went straight to 2 hours of gymnastics afterwards and still doesn’t seem tired. Those barbituates in her cereal must really be working…
The best part was that of course I knew a few mommies at the park. When we made our first lap one of my friends said, “Nice moves.” To which my daughter replied without missing a beat, “Oh yeah, she’s a natural.”
Er, yeah.
Samantha literally ran/danced/skipped/cartwheeled the whole entire way. Sometimes that kid never stops. I wonder if they give points for style?
The girls also got ther Kids Marathon charms and certificates today. I’m excited to dole those out when they reach their milestones.
Only one thing bothers me: Veronica pronates quite badly (just like her father). She hasn’t complained of any discomfort, but if she does I know what I’ll be working on first.
It’s supposed to rain hard tomorrow. The girls are both still adamant about going out. We might do laps around the living room instead. ![]()
Lookin’ Good! Until… November 4, 2008
Posted by kimayars UncategorizedToday started out REALLY well…
Breakfast: 3/4c egg beaters, 1c strawberries, 1 wasa cracker with hummus
Snack: Kashi GoLean bar (gotta eat those up!)
Lunch: Tuna salad (3oz tuna, 1/2 chopped apple, 1/2 chopped cuke, 1tsp mayo), wasa cracker with hummus (love those).
Snack: Kashi GoLean bar
Then chaos took over.
Samantha (our 5-year-old) is home with a tummy bug. Jeff also took my van into the shop. It needed some fairly major work done ($2100 worth) and needs to stay over night. This means that I had to pick up Jeff at the Park and Ride right at dinner time. Add in a very emotional 7-year-old (hard day and disappointed we couldn’t put in another mile for the kids marathon) and all of a sudden the Golden Arches are a dream come true.
So my dinner tonight was a Big Mac. And I LOVE Big Macs, plus I have an iron stomach. So do I feel guilty? Yes. Did I enjoy it? Hell yeah. I’m salivating now just thinking about it. It is probably one of my most favorite foods.
I look back on the day and realize that for 75% of it, I did pretty good. And like they say in The Zone book, I just need to make my next meal a “Zone Meal” to get back into it. And that’s what I’ll do. But I need more Eggbeaters. Dude, those are awesome.
When things just go right. November 3, 2008
Posted by kimayars UncategorizedToday my riding lesson was cancelled, but I headed out to ride anyway. It had been raining hard for the past few days, and I was sure it would be raining this morning. But somehow the clouds opened up and I was able to ride in the glorious sun.
I now believe that I have the dirtiest horse in the world. Not only does he have his fuzzy winter coat already, but he seems to enjoy grinding in the “clay-ish” mud we have out here. He and Shazam are turned out into a pasture that has ONE muddy spot, probably about 5′ x 10′. He rolls there EVERY day. I swear he has layers of dirt. I am SO glad he’s not white.
We continued our work on transitions both within and between gaits. Tigger was the best he’s been in a while, and I felt that he was really listening to my seat when I asked him to shorten. His head still pops up as he begins to hollow, but that moment is getting shorter and shorter. If I just remember to keep light contact it’s over with by the next stride. I was particularly pleased with the down transisitons: He’s underneath himself more so than a few weeks ago. Gotta love progress!
The highlight was that I actually got to ride with Sherene today. It’s been a while since we’ve gotten to ride together in the arena, and I so enjoy the company. Life is good.
Hear that? It’s my STOMACH. November 3, 2008
Posted by kimayars UncategorizedGrrrrroooowwwwllll… Tummy hungry.
Actually, my first day on “The Zone” wasn’t nearly as bad as I thought. While I am hungry, and I am craving sugar, the meals themselves were pleasant. Here’s what I ate:
Breakfast: 3/4c “Cheese and Chive” Eggbeaters, 1c strawberries, 1 satsuma
Lunch: 3oz Teriyaki chicken (breast), 1/4c white rice, 1 large apple (Honeycrisp!), 1c salad with about 1tsp Miso dressing.
Snack: Kashi GoLean “Chewy Oatmeal Raisin” bar
Snack: Kashi GoLean “Crunchy Carmel Cluster” bar
Dinner: 3oz of pot roast, 1c cucumber, 1 satsuma, 1 Wasa multigrain cracker with 1tsp of hummus. (The cracker & hummus was a craving I gave into.)
So, in reviewing the day I do feel that I did not overeat. But I’m not too sure how close I am to being in “The Zone”. I think I had the protein part dialed in pretty well, but I need some standards that I can use for the carbohydrates. Even though I do this with reluctance, there are some highlights:
- Eggbeaters is DELICIOUS! I could eat those every morning. Especially the “cheese & chive!”
- I actually really enjoyed the meals. They tasted good and, except for the portion sizes, really didn’t feel like I was giving up anything or deprived.
- I’m not sure I can give up the Kashi bars. They are SUPER yummy.
So for tomorrow, I will further refine the carb side of things. I have Zone bars to try tomorrow for my snack. As much as I would like to make whole foods my snack, because of the time of day it would be pretty difficult. I also have to be careful about the bars I choose because Veronica has a severe peanut allergy (so we try and stay peanut-free in the house). Taking peanuts out of the ingredients for your bar limits your selection quite a bit. Luckily the treenuts are fine.
I have lots of tuna in the fridge. Something tells me that tuna will be on the menu for tomorrow…
And thanks so much for all the feedback and comments! It is really helping!
