Hear that? It’s my STOMACH. November 3, 2008
Posted by kimayars UncategorizedGrrrrroooowwwwllll… Tummy hungry.
Actually, my first day on “The Zone” wasn’t nearly as bad as I thought. While I am hungry, and I am craving sugar, the meals themselves were pleasant. Here’s what I ate:
Breakfast: 3/4c “Cheese and Chive” Eggbeaters, 1c strawberries, 1 satsuma
Lunch: 3oz Teriyaki chicken (breast), 1/4c white rice, 1 large apple (Honeycrisp!), 1c salad with about 1tsp Miso dressing.
Snack: Kashi GoLean “Chewy Oatmeal Raisin” bar
Snack: Kashi GoLean “Crunchy Carmel Cluster” bar
Dinner: 3oz of pot roast, 1c cucumber, 1 satsuma, 1 Wasa multigrain cracker with 1tsp of hummus. (The cracker & hummus was a craving I gave into.)
So, in reviewing the day I do feel that I did not overeat. But I’m not too sure how close I am to being in “The Zone”. I think I had the protein part dialed in pretty well, but I need some standards that I can use for the carbohydrates. Even though I do this with reluctance, there are some highlights:
- Eggbeaters is DELICIOUS! I could eat those every morning. Especially the “cheese & chive!”
- I actually really enjoyed the meals. They tasted good and, except for the portion sizes, really didn’t feel like I was giving up anything or deprived.
- I’m not sure I can give up the Kashi bars. They are SUPER yummy.
So for tomorrow, I will further refine the carb side of things. I have Zone bars to try tomorrow for my snack. As much as I would like to make whole foods my snack, because of the time of day it would be pretty difficult. I also have to be careful about the bars I choose because Veronica has a severe peanut allergy (so we try and stay peanut-free in the house). Taking peanuts out of the ingredients for your bar limits your selection quite a bit. Luckily the treenuts are fine.
I have lots of tuna in the fridge. Something tells me that tuna will be on the menu for tomorrow…
And thanks so much for all the feedback and comments! It is really helping!
Mile 1: Check! November 3, 2008
Posted by kimayars WalkToday I promised Veronica that we would stop off at Centennial Fields after school to start preparing for the Seattle Kids Marathon. She’s been running in PE class, but it won’t be enough, so there is some outside effort involved. She has 2 hours of gymnstics tonight, so I suggested that we walk a mile instead of run it. She was down with that.
As soon as we popped out of the car her hand went out, expecting me to lay something in it. “What?” I asked. Veronica rolled her eyes and said, “iPhone?” We of course had to go through the “how do you ask politely” thing, but after she showed me that there are some good manners buried in there, I realized she had a plan. Immediately she turned the iPhone into iPod. After the Wiggles tracks were located, she started the timer and we were off.
“Mom,” she said, “we need to keep up a brisk pace. Do you know what brisk is? That means FASTER.” Evidently we had a PR to break…
The walk was pretty nice. It rained on us a bit, and I did have to carry Samantha the entire way (she forgot her shoes, plus she wasn’t feeling well), but by Jove we made it. Here are some highlights by the kids:
Veronica: “Look Mom! Elk!”
Me: “Yup. Those are Elk.”
Veronica: “It’s a whole pile of them!”
Samantha: “What’s that Blankie?”
Samantha as Blankie: “Chirp-chirp-chirp.”
Samantha: “Why yes Blankie, we’re doing a maranon.”
(*puzzled look*)
Samantha: “Mom, what is a maranon?”
Me: “It’s a marathon. It’s a race that is 26.2 miles.”
Samantha: (*rolls eyes*) “We’re going to be here FOREVER!”
The great thing is that it didn’t burn the kids out and they were SUPER excited to check off their mile when we got home. Veronica asked when we could go again. I think we’ll try for Wednesday…

Confusion in The Zone November 3, 2008
Posted by kimayars UncategorizedHoly crap, I am way confused. I started planning out my food for the week using principles in The Zone. Hoo boy.
So here is what I know: According to what I read, I should be consuming 11 blocks of protein, 11 blocks of carbohydrates, and 11 blocks of fat. A block of protein is 7g, a block of carbohydrates is 9g, and a block of fat is a “smidge”. Fair enough. Sounds pretty straight forward.
Of course there is this list in the book of what foods are “best”. In general lean meats for protein work well (turkey, chicken) and non-starchy fruits and veggies are acceptable as well.
Here’s where I am having problems: I can find out by reading the packaging how much protein I need to eat. But calculating the carbs is getting kind of tough. It seems to be a HUGE amount of food. For example, if I were to eat 3 blocks of cucumbers, I’d be eating a cuke and a half. That does not sound appealing to me.
I decided to try and plan this out one day at a time. For tomorrow, this is my plan:
Breakfast: Egg beaters and strawberries
Snack: Kashi Bar
Lunch: 3oz of tuna salad (tuna, mayo, & celery), cucumbers, and oranges
Snack: Kashi Bar
Dinner: 3oz of pot roast (I’ll try and trim off as much fat as possible), and a spinach salad
Looking at this I feel like I’m gong to starve. I so don’t want to be hungry. However, it appears to be a necessary evil. If you have done The Zone before, please feel free to comment on my food plan. I don’t have a lot of confidence in it.
I tried, honest! October 31, 2008
Posted by kimayars UncategorizedI wrote an update to my progress (or lack thereof) with The Zone, but I must hav messed something up because now I can’t find it. I am challenged in these ways.
So anyway, this will catch things up:
- I rode my horse three times this week. When I ride Sunday (and yes, I will ride) that will make 4 rides this week! I am very proud of that as I really had to squeeze one in this week. Riding is an outlet for me, and I am a MUCH happier person when I can spend time with my pony.
- I am convinced that 11 blocks on The Zone is going to make me hungry, cranky, and a pain to be around. Given that I have a rather large event on Saturday for the non-profit I work for (it is our largest fund raiser) I decided to postpone being crabby until Monday. But I am working out a plan, and will move forward. I hate this body. (Size 8…size 8…size 8…) My “Yoga for Equestrians” DVD came in. I plan to do that on my “rest days”.
- I am going to run the Rock ‘n Roll Half Marathon in June of ‘09. Time to dig out my “Super Kim” cape. I’m hoping to convince someone else to do it with me (and you know who you are!).
- This is the most peaceful Halloween yet, as deaf dogs can not hear doorbells.
That’s really about it. This weekend I will be detailing out my food and exercise plan for the week. In fact, I’ll post it Sunday night. Nothing like accountability, eh?
Happy Halloween!
Kim enters The Zone… October 24, 2008
Posted by kimayars Uncategorized…and exits with a handful of M&M’s.
I have decided to try The Zone as an “eating lifestyle”. I’ve heard a lot of people say good things about it. What none of them have said so far is that it was easy. So I went as far to take my measurements and determine that I need 11 blocks of protein. That sets me up nicely for 3 blocks at breakfast, 3 blocks at lunch, 3 blocks at breakfast, and two 1-block snacks. Now to figure out what that exactly means…
My oldest daughter got strep on Wednesday, so I wasn’t able to ride Tigger (or do much else, for that matter). I haven’t heard how it went but Sherene said that he looked pretty decent. My daughter is doing much better, so that’s a plus. It does make you feel helpless when your wee ones are sick.
Speaking of my oldest daughter, she wants to do the Seattle Kids Marathon. I’m game, so here we go!
